Summary of the Presentation

Title: Lignin recovery methods and their applications in the production of bio-renewables

Abstract:

Lignin is the primary by-product of pulp and paper industry (Kraft pulp mills). In Brazil, hybrids of Eucalyptus grandis x E. urophila are mainly used to make fiberboards, pulp, and papermaking industries. Approximately, 55 million tons of lignin are produced by the pulp industry annually. Currently, modern pulp mills generate their thermal energy demands and sell excess energy as electricity by burning lignin. However, lignin could be vastly applied for the different range of applications such as carbon fibers, activated carbon, adhesives, resins, and others by using chemical and biotechnological methods.

This presentation will elaborate the chemistry and characterization of lignin, methods of lignin recovery, biotechnological methods of lignin utilization into bio-renewables.

Dr. Anuj Kumar Chandel is a professor in the Department of Biotechnology, Engineering School of Lorena, University of São Paulo, Brazil. He has over 20 years’ research experience working on various aspects of industrial biotechnology (production of industrial enzymes, biofuels and bio-based products), and membrane-based separation of fats, proteins, and viruses. Dr. Anuj did his PhD from India in 2009 and then did three post-doctoral fellowships in Stellenbosch University, South Africa; Engineering School of Lorena, University of São Paulo, Brazil; and University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, USA for almost 6 years. Dr. Anuj has also worked in industries for Penicillin Acylase production in India at large scale for 3 years and for cellulosic ethanol production at Centro de Tecnologia Canaviera (CTC)-Piracicaba, São Paulo for 2 years. He has published 98 articles in peer-reviewed journals and 46 book chapters and has edited 15 books on various aspects of industrial biotechnology. He has recorded one Brazilian patent also. Dr. Anuj has travelled to many countries like USA, Canada, Mexico, Turkey and Ireland. He is consultant to many biotechnology start-ups and funding agencies.

Currently, Anuj has a research project on “Biovalorization of kraft lignin through establishment of metagenomic sequencing”, approved by FAPESP. His primary research interest is to develop sustainable processes for bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass into renewable fuels and biochemicals by bridging the gap between research laboratories and industries.
